The thread is in the AMD build section, I think it's supposed to be understood. But I also think you were just trying to help.

Anyway go with the 940 x4 and some good fast low latency ddr2 and a 4890 with a good non-reference cooling solution (like the saphire vapor-x).

If you want to go ddr3 thats fine and may or may not expand your upgrade options in the future, but it will be more expensive and you just wont see a difference in performance right now.

good luck, and welcome to OCN.

Not a direct response to anyone specifically.

Countless times people post in one section or another asking for build suggestions because there's no middle ground. Unless they say in their post what platform they're interested in, I see no reason no to post the best build you can recommend for the budget.

How does this look? Remove the DVD Drive if it's not needed.

The hard drive is faster, has 2x as much space for $10 more.
Why go DDR3 when you can go DDR2 and save money? If you must go DDR3 I'll find a cheaper alternative for you
The Scythe Mugen 2 performs better than the Zalman he picked
The 4890 have different models you can pick. Either go with the one I picked, or XFX, or Asus as they have a nice cooling design on one of their models...
That is some of the best DDR2 your going to find.

I'm in your budget by $2!!! And I fit a quad in there
Very good computer for 730$. Would be my pick

So you gave him MORE expensive DDR2 and a better HSF. The HDD will run the same speed. If you want confimation just check Tom's Hardware and it will tell you that pretty much any Seagate is faster than a Western Digital with exception to the Raptors. Also he said he wanted a small hard drive since he is getting one next month. I gave him the 720 because it would save him money any hopefully he could unlock the 4th core which is more likely since I put the 790GX South Bridge in the list like you did but yours only has one PCI-E x16 so if he wanted to do Crossfire he would have to buy a new board. The memory I listed is the exact same that I have and I absolutely love it and it has great overclocking potential. The only thing that I will agree with is that the heatsink is better and your choice on a graphics card.

it is least likely to unlock 4th core with 720, he has a better chance with x2 550 BE at unlocking cores
