Other than the standard AV and defense, I would recommend you creating two partitions (one for the OS and one for the files).... do a periodic re-imaging of the OS drive if you think there's a problem.

I do put antivirus and spyware protection on there.
I don't know why their computer is so slow, but I get the feeling that viruses get on there and go undetected. its also a VERY old computer, so more power is good anyways. I go there every few months to check up on their computer.
