Default First build, for beggining of next year, $1100 Budget

Ok so I am planning on purchasing a computer in February/March I would love an AMD/ATI build so I decided to post to get some peoples responses.

So I have a $1100 Limit, would like it to last an extremely long time, and would enjoy overclocking eventually.

Well since it is a first time build and I have nothing of my own I guess I should start with things not needed.

1.)OS getting Win7 from Microsoft for $30 for being a student.
2.)Monitor Already have one small but effective (19in Dynex(Best buy brand).

Yep so that is all I have, sad I know but it works for now (as a tv). Now I must bid thee farewell because i know you guys give advise for building awesome computers. So thank you in advanced as well as getting +rep if I can hand it out.

Any build you'd make in 6 months will be completely different from what anyone would recommend you today.

Just like everyone said, the longer you wait the more some prices will come down and new things will come out. The 22nm processors may be out by then...or near release so 45nm chips should certainly come down a bit.

With that budget, you'll have a great build. However, if you are looking for extreme performance and overclockability, any i7 that would fit your budget would probably satisfy you the most. I love my AMD, but if I had enough money I would have gotten an i7 because you can't beat the performance.

To begin with, sorry I'm talking in British £

Your best bet in my opinion would be to get an AM3 board, AMD Athlon II X4 620 . This way you have chosen a decent quad core processor, but nice and cheap too (£70). This way you have future proofed yourself, so you can upgrade to the new AM3 chips from AMD coming out in Q3 2010.

Then get some fast 1600Mhz ram, 4Gb of Kingston 1600 DDR3 is about £70.

Graphics, a 5850 or 5870. Being the latest, awesome card, DX11, one of these will serve your for a lot of time to come. If you wanted to upgrade, then you could wack another one in X-Fire! Also, looking even more further into the future if you wanted to upgrade , at least you have something easily sellable, and the card likely to hold the most value. The 4xxx series cards are gonna be worth f*** all late 2010. Also if your into your audio, the 58** series cards support HD Audio bitstreaming, so there is no need at all for a soundcard!

Couple of 1tb drives in a RAID config. £100 for 2 of these in UK

Case, in my opinion the Lancool Dragonlord is a totally awesome case for the money. It's about £60 here! Easily on par with the HAF 9x2's!

So.... (average prices)

Lancool DragonLord Case : £60
Decent AM3 Mobo: £75
4GB 1600mhz DDR3 Ram: £75
AMD Athlon II X4 620: £80
2 X 1tb HDD: £100
5850: £200

So minus PSU, DVD drive and cooling, £590 for an awesome quad core gaming PC. Very future proof in a lot of ways!

If your not interested in sticking with a budget quad core processor for now, then go for the Phenom II X4 965, adding about £80 to the total cost!

Cheers, Oli
