Talking Server For Gaming?

Hey,
I'm not really sure about the whole idea and since i've never really used a server, i figured i would get some better advice. Is it possible to use a server for gaming while not using it for anything else and still get good results? I'm looking at setting up an AMD 64 (or 64 fx) system with an Nvida card (preferrably the 7900GT) and either OCZ or Corsair RAM. I was looking into possibly setting up registered RAM if i went with a server as well; though this would be way more expensive, and im not sure if it would work with gaming. Thanks

If you make a server, don't put a good video card in it, all you need the server to do is run the processing commands basically meaning that you need RAM, Maybe an Opteron 250 you're going to need REGISTERED RAM because that processor is 940pin meaning that all the Motherboards that support it only support Registered RAM.

You may want about... 2-4GB of memory depending on how serious your server will, and as well as your system itself being good, I suggest Cable Internet or if you have it in your area, FIOS. Because if you don't have a good connection people are going to lag no matter how good your servers spec's are.

And of course to hold all of this you need either a regular Full ATX Case or a Rackmount Server Case.

Speaking of which, I have a couple of matched P3 1Ghz processors... If i get a dual board, with some ram and a scsi array, would this be a good server for gaming?

I'm not sure, becuase I've seen some servers REALLY fast with like... PC2100 ram and I didn't think that certain memory should be run on servers under PC3200, so I dont know the dynamics of it all. But I'm pretty sure that it could run a decent CSS server.

If you download the dedicated server setup for CS:S I know that you can set your own computer up as a server. I have done this and played while my computer was acting as a server and as long as I keep the number of people on it down to like 8-12 then it runs just fine for me.

I could if I wanted to. Why would you think that I couldn't? Just curious.

Like what im aiming for here is a computer i can host some web pages and games at one time, then use it for personal gaming not connected to the internet at other times. Will games be affected by the use of a server at all?
