You might want to update some of the Opteron overclocks. A few of us in the 939 club have reached stable 3.1Ghz and above. Got to keep pushing the limits!

I am still running a 165 and a 170 the 165 is CCBBE 06something. The 170 is LCBQE. I have one more 170 packed up in storage wicth I plan on using in a HTPC with a DFI mATX rs482 Infinity(good board for an ATI, overclocks great). The 165 will be put into something else. I love those chips but with summer heat being a constant 100+ where I am at I have to down colck them to 2.2ghz as air is not so good cooling in this weather and my kids being how destructive they are I am afraid of any liquids near my components. TO much unkown variables to trust. Only the LCBQE has good temps the others have hot running cores and barely do 2.9ghz. Both run in dual boot configs with 2gbs of DDR500. They still hold well against newer builds just not as well as before. Lower latencies help too.

I still have hope for AMD and their quads are really nice for decent budget builds and I really want to try out an HTPC with a 780g board and a HD4850, and the newest 9850BE Phenom.

Default I know it's an old thread but but but what about?

AM2 may indeed be on par with 939 opties. However that is still not much of a reason to go AM2. Yes you get the added speeds of DDR2 however that is all you obtain. AM2 was AMD's socket to get a foothold into the DDR2 standards...it was created simply to keep up with Intel and C2D...lets face it

Now as AM2 architecture offers very little over 939 there isn't much of a ''Push factor'' to go to AM2....AM3 and K10 now thats a different story all together.

With Intel users there was a large pushing factor to move from Intel P4 and Dual core to C2D because C2D was a completely new architecture all together. C2D did not only incorperate DDR2 standards but the architecture was completely different or atleast vastly improved on compared to P4. Not only that but C2D was 65nm.

Overall what im trying to say is that with AM2 and 939 there really isnt much difference so the push factor to get AM2 is very little...well atleast in my eyes.

However in comparision to the Intel story this is very different.

Dont worry I do see what you are saying and its a valid point so please dont think im bashing or anything. I was just stating a point alongside yours !.
I don't see any mentioning of people having to upgrade the mobo cpu and ram in order to use an AM2 Opty. Now if you get a nice 939 Opty 165-185 then you could save on ram and mobo and still have a very nice machine. Thats all of my two cents worth with my pockets inside out and out of change...
