Default DTRs: good for OC? can i attach to water?

I'm thinking about getting the Athlon 64 3400+ ClawHammer DTR chip. I've heard that the physical size may not allow it to fit everything.. and for my new system, I'd like to try out watercooling if for no other reason than the coolness. I've always wanted to try. Is it recommended when overclocking? Seems like it'd be the best. Will I be able to fit the attachment onto a DTR processor?

Would it be better to get the 3200+ winchester or newcastle? I read that the 90nm used with winchesters is an overclocker's friend, but I do like the sound of 1mb L2 on the ClawHammer DTR. I've heard that it doesn't really help THAT much, though, so probably whatever would overl**** best would be the better setup for me.. if that won't attach to watercooling then that sucks.

Welcome to the forum Grab the mobile with the clawhammer core. Mobiles are good ocers you could probably hit 2.8 or 2.9. Add some water to that and it would beat the winnie or newcastle.

The A64 Mobiles and DTR are both great CPUs. From what I've seen so far both overclock around the same 2.4ghz - 2.7ghz. 2.8ghz - 2.9ghz is really high hope for an A64. I have water cooling (23C idle - 29-32C Load) and 300fsb capable memory and I cant even hit 2.7ghz.

Yiffy also has 260fsb capable ram and his mobile cant get past 2.7 either... The memory controller is the limiting factor when it comes to A64s.. Wether Mobile, or DTR...

would the normal attachments on most watercooling systems fit a dtr? i read that it's tougher to find heatsinks that fit on them, but i'm very new to all of this, so i'm not sure if the hose attachments fit DTRs?

since the memory controller is going to be the limiting factor, which is the best? sorry, but i'm quite a noob.. i didn't even see those specs listed on newegg is that the hyper transport speed?

how would the a64 3000+ clawhammer compare to the 3400+? could i oc them just about the same?

i have _no_ experience OC'ing, as I've had a gateway which I can't seem to overclock..

The DTR will be your best bet for a good overclock, and REALLY good performance.

The Mobile and DTR versions of the A64's dont come with heatspreaders...thats the only visible difference between them and desktop versions.

I don't think memory controllers are really that big an issue on A64's...Frags running 290 or so FSB? MANY MANY people are running high FSB, low multipliers on A64's with very nice results.

The 3000 is a nice chip to turn up the FSB on, since its multiplier is at 9. The DTR will feel faster though because of the 1meg L2 (versus 512 on most other A64's)

***EDIT

I forgot to answer the water question...as long as the kit you're buying says A64 (socket 754) then it will fit fine.

Yeah mine's overclocking like a mother... I'm picking up a new PSU in about a week, decided to go with the 520w ModStream, a new case, and I'm going to voltmod my board to get me some more vdimm, I'm trying for at least 2.7ghz on air out of my 3000+, we'll see

I think they have there specs wrong, though it will run on all of the ones you listed... You won't have a problem running PC3200 or anything above that with it.

I run PC3200 OCZ EL Rev.2 Platinum on mine and it works like a charm, and I'm only pumping 2.8 vdimm into it!

AMD says:http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/...E10249,00.html

the 3000 WILL support DDR400....

Apparently a 3000 CG stepping, for 157.
