Default optys on the way out

I found myself disappointed as I was looking for a mobo for my Opty 1212 (Socket AM2) I couldn't find one board that officially supported it. What gives, is the Opty being phased out, or is it just not that common?

You won't see many "desktop" motherboards that officially support the AM2 Opty. Have you checked Tyan?

it was designed as a server cpu so mainstream boards choose not to support it.

most 775 boards can except xeons easily but do they state they support it ? no

try google and see what comes up

Well, Opterons are officially server processors, so you may not find many motherboards that say they support them. Pretty much any AM2 board will support it as long as the processor is AM2 as well.

DFI is one company who will give you a very hard time about running an opteron.

Here is some hopeful news from MSI: http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?f...9&maincat_no=1

Note the "Under Testing" for Opterons on the K9A Platinum

exactly, they dont officially state they accept them since they are desktop mobo's and that is a server CPU. Same as you dont see any 939 mobo's that officially support Opty's, yet half of this board has a 165

Ya I figured they wouldn't be as supported as others due to the fact they are server sockets and all... But I was amazed when I called some of the companies and asked specifically if the board would work, and them having a sheer lack of knowledge on the subject. I don't know if it was just some clueless Indian with a very American accent, but I was put on hold while he checked with his superiors. So thats why I was a little wary.

Don't the new Opty use Socket F (1207 pins) while AM2 use a 940 pin socket? I thought it was only the old socket 939 Opterons that could fit into desktop mobos.

Sorry for the confusion, my AM2 fit into the mobo's, it was just that I didn't know if they would work well with other and all.
