I tweaked, I reseated, I tightened.

Now my temps are 34c core and 34c off-core loaded

how much of a drop should one expect from removing an ihs? because it seems pretty risky for just 5C's or so.

Mine dropped about 2c from a lapped IHS.

I have also removed my IHS i had the same problems as you .I had to use a lot of AS5 to get mine to work.I also had to make four pads out if tape or my temps at boot up would be 68c.But i got a drop of about 5c form a unlaped IHS with my zalman 9500.I almost craped my pantes when my balde hit somthing under the IHS.But thats the fun of taking it all off.
