Make sure you sandpaper the hole, and then put some U rubber over it to avoid sharp edges. Put some grease around the newly drilled hole, and then screw your computer, screw it hard. Maybe install some UV lights and turn em up to indicate that your computer is also excited.

Those are some great temps you have there. The load isnt very much higher then the idle. My old set-up ran like this 32-34C idle/54-56c load when ambients were at 78-82 F with AS5 and a IHS on my old Pentium D 805. It was overclocked to 2.9 GHz at only 1.2875 vcore. Could run at 2.66 stock with 1.276 vcore or maybe even lower never tried and temps were a degree or so lower. Once I got it up to around 3.2(highest stable) it required 1.425 vcore and temps were at 40-42c idle and 60-63c load. Good luck with the overclocking and the naked 3700+ Sandy.

Personally i think its stupid to remove the IHS. I ruined a good P4 Northwood trying to do so, the last of its kind

Is it really worth the risk for an extra 2-3c cooler? Not to me.

good and p4 don't go in the same sentence

when i removed my IHS i seen a good 10c drop.

you had to have messed up pretty good to screw up a proc by taking off the IHS, its not hard at all as long as you use the necessary precautionary steps.

plus the IHS makes a killer keychain

Whats wrong with the P4? Sure, it wasnt top end even in its day, but it was a pretty good CPU and fun to OC. Made over a 1ghz OC on my Northwood.....great OCer.

....got 1.3 GHz overclock on my opty

just sayin that cutting the IHS off has made for good temp drops, at least when it comes to opty procs.

Well, when you have a P4 2.66 OCed to 3.54ghz with a 1.9v vcore and a max load temp of 41c removing the IHS wont help the OC much lol. At least thats why it was stupid to do for me, since it wouldnt have helped even if it lowered my temps much since my temps never got high.

This was all on stock cooling as well.

I think that on some eMachines computers they come like that, with no IHS. I took apart my son's eMachines a while ago and after taking off the stock heatsink I found this:

I am not sure about other companies or newer eMachines however.

Jarvis, that is normal for an Athlon XP. The cores were exposed without a IHS. I'm having troubles seeing which model XP it is...is that a 3100+ ? Just curious
