Unless it comes to instability, I intend to keep on CnQ. If the only way to get to 250, given the heat dissipation capabilities of my heatsink, is to drop my multiplier, then I will be forced to disable CnQ when I explicitly set the multiplier at 10, 9, or whatever is necessary.

Regards RAM: I just paid $100 for that RAM and by God I am going to use it. The BIOS and Windows Experience both see 3.5 GB. Even with the lower front side, Windows boots and runs faster.

The question here is, is it better to keep lower timings and a lower front side bus, or to raise the timings to get a faster CPU/RAM divider. Is there any I can test this empirically rather than subjectively? At present, any attempts to drop the CAS Latency below 3 results in the system failing to boot to windows, and sometimes, failing to POST. Would a voltage increase help this at all?

I was just running OCCT and had a strange error. The cores were holding at around 46/52º C at my present clock. (CPU: 234 * 11 = 2574; RAM: CPU / 7.5 = 343, 3-4-4-8-2t.) Those of you who have been following will notice this is cooler than my last clock by about 5º C even though it is faster. Anyway, Core 1 briefly showed that it shot up to 200º C (about a half of a second) causing OCCT to end (as I had a 55º C limit on it).

Does anyone know why this happened? Is this just a mistake in CoreTemp? Or is it a sign of something more miscevious?

Futher proof that the new case fans are superior: My idle temps are now 30/36º C (down from 40/44º C) and my ambient case temperature is 26º C (down from 35º C). For sake of completeness, room temperature is 17º C.

So you think I should try OCCT again, this time with auto-cancel shut off (provided I am sitting here watching it)?

Probably. Try running Orthos too - that tends to really stress my system more than OCCT.

I wanted to run a successful OCCT before running Orthos.

Addendum: I will not be running either until I get back on Sunday. I am going back to Long Island for a wedding.

A little update for you question:

Socket 939 tends to be happier with lower speeds and tighter timings. Pretty much your EASIEST way to OC that sucker would be to keep your RAM around the default 200MHz (DDR400) with your overclock, and just leave the timings at stock for now. That way you can rule out RAM being an issue. CPU speed matters way more than RAM speed. Here's what I've figured out so far with my rig:

200-210FSB - leave at 200 divider
210-250FSB - drop to 166 divider
250-330FSB - drop to 133 divider
331-??? - drop to 100 divider.

For example, my overclock is 333FSB x 9 with gives me 3.0GHz. My RAM is on the 133MHz divider which gives me 214.5MHz (DDR429) on my RAM. However I'm running DDR500 and only 2GB...so my memory controller isn't as stressed as yours will be running 4GB. Your easiest way to do this would be to eliminate RAM as an issue when you're overclocking so you can find out your top overclock on your CPU. You can continue to use OCCT between adjustments. But once you find a happy speed...make sure you run Orthos for 8+ hours on priority 6 or better (blended test of course) to make sure you're stable.

And again...don't worry TOO much about temperatures till they hit 60-65*C under load. 65*C is where I'd personally stop (as a lot of other 939'ers as well)...so your temps are fine up till that point. So keep pushin her man! That's a Toledo core, right? Dont' settle for less than 2.7GHz...and you might even get lucky to reach the happy 3.0!! Hope this helps!

I just got home from Long Island about an hour ago. Just enough time to run an OCCT!

Current configuration:

CPU: Clock: 250 x 11 (5) = 2,750 (1,250), HT: 1000
RAM: 366 (357), 3-4-4-8-2t
Idle: 32/39º C
OCCT Load: 48/54º C

(Where numbers in parentheticals is with CnQ engaged)

I think I have reached the limits of OCCT's usefulness. OCCT can no longer stress 100% of the Core. It now tops out at 96.73%. I am going to run Orthos tomorrow I think. Should I leave the RAM divider at 2/1.5, or think I should try to bump it to 2/1.66? At 2/1.5, I am below the default clock whereas 2/1.66 would be above the default clock.

Addendum: Right after I posted this, I got a window's stop error regards my RAM. I have now accordingly dropped the ratio to 2/1.33, making RAM be 333 FSB then.

Hey blitz do you run Memtest86 before booting into to windows, when your unsure if your ram is stable or not?

No, I have not run Memtest86 since the last time I ran Ubuntu, at least 8 months ago. I will be starting an Orthos momentarily to see if this clock is as stable as I think it is.
