You read my mind
![]() Next weekend I was thinking of taking a trip to an automotive store (or wal-mart ) to buy some automotive paint, bondo, and fine-grit sandpaper The paint and bondo are for a case mod idea, but I'm thinking of holding off on those until after I'm done with my acrylic case (see sig) Quote:

Update: I am on vacation from school until next monday! I have in my possession a used AC Freezer 64 Pro, and some fine-grit sandpaper up to 1500 grit I beleive. I will be lapping this week!
Any tips are welcomed and needed, and if anybody can point me in the direction of a lapping tutorial, go ahead ![]() I also purchased some acetone for removing the stock thermal paste from my processor. Tips on the removal are also welcome! comments?

Search for GuardianOdin's lapping guide here on OCN (I'd do it for you, but this is a stolen moment from work)
. It's one of the very best I've seen on the subject.thlnk3r also has a few good lapping guide links, so you can hit him up. ![]() As far as removing TIM, I use 99% isopropyl alcohol. I found it at a local Fry's Electronics store. Isopropyl alcohol might be the cheapest thing to use for TIM removal, but the higher the purity, the less likely it is you'll have any residue left over (higher purity alcohol works better as a solvent, I'd say). Also, use a non-lint depositing fabric in concert with the alcohol. I use kitchen paper towels (because I'm cheap). ![]() Hope this helps!

me too
![]() but I already bought the acetone, I had read somewhere to use acetone and cotton (balls or swabs). I just have to make sure not to get acetone on anything other than the heat spreader, because it melts PCB ![]() Will search for those guides now, thanks!

HOLY MOLY
Are you serious about the acetone melting PCBs?!? ![]() I'd be really careful with that stuff, then...

yeah I'm serious, thats why its so good at cleaning thermal paste off
![]() Just found some old metal polish, not sure if it's still any good or not. Its too liquidy and not pasty enough ![]() I might need to run to the hardware store to get more sandpaper, I only have one sheet of each grit . I don't know, opinions? So I have sandpaper, used ACFreezer64Pro, acetone for cleaning TIM, 3 in one oil, metal polish. What am I forgetting? (need to find a flat surface still...)

I don't recommend using the metal polish; it will leave particulates and other gunk unless you do a sensational job of cleaning the aftermath.
I've used a set of lapping papers on two heatsinks and a CPU IHS (just as a rough gauge of how economically I used what I had at the time), primarily because I wet-sand. My technique borders on the insane (I have no qualms about running my CPU under running water), but if you're unwilling to go this route it's perfectly understandable.
