I've had my AMD Athlon XP-M 2800+ (Barton =]) for a few years now and I had to buy a new motherboard because my old PC Chips M863G was having voltage problems.
__________________Anywho, I recently bought a Micro-Star (MSI) MS-6734 motherboard and my processor was running at 800mhz. After a while, I realized that it was the multiplier that was off. I know that it's supposed to be runnin at 2133mhz (thats what it did on the old board) but it's not on this. I have a program that I can use to raise the multiplier (RightMark CPU Clock Utility) but when I do, it heats up like a mofo. Running it at 2.13ghz jumped the temp into the high 60s (while idle mind you). I'm 90% sure it didn't run that hot before on the old board, cause if it did it would be in the 70s when I'd be playing and I pushed it that hard on this board and the computer auto-shutoff on me. So what's the problem with this? By the way, I have the FSB increased to 166mhz to give me a speed of 1002mhz (only reads 999mhz in My Computer...also doesn't know what processor it is....says Unknown CPU Typ) Help is appreciated, thanks/cheers ![]()

Never use software to overclock. Do it inside the BIOS.
Many boards used to report the speeds on XP-M chips incorrectly, forcing the user to set it manually. That particular chip should be 266x16 @ 1.55V, so make sure you set the correct values inside the BIOS. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...icroprocessors

Forgot to mention that the only setting I can change in the BIOS is the FSB...my only choices there are 100, 133, and 166.

If I do that, it'll heat up pretty quickly...how bout this. What's a good range for idle temperature?
__________________Right now, running at 1ghz (FSB 166 and Multiplier 6) it's 59C... Don't forget that I want it at FSB 133 16x. I'm just worried about temps.

Actually that list is kind of misleading. The Athlon XP 2800+ is 2.08GHz (166 x 12.5). I know, I have the same chip. And 1.55-1.65v is stock voltage.
One thing to make note of here....Socket A chips and motherboards REALLY have a hard time getting proper temp readings with virtually anything anymore. They're just not supported! So just make sure you have a proper seat job on your HSF, and that you used some good thermal grease, and you'll be fine . I wouldn't even worry about the temp on your chip just so long as you seated and greased everything fine.

If you're absolutely positive that I'll be alright with the temps, I'll set it back to 133, and crank up the multiplier...and still, what's the range for idle temperature on these things?

Sorry about that....looked at the wrong specs...you've got an Athlon XP-M!!!! I was thinking it was a standard Athlon XP
. My bad.
