Default If you get bored... 9850 Overclocking issue.

I was bored and haven't been able to get the FSB above 210 on my mobo with the 9850 so I decided to play in the BIOS some. I shutdown two cores and got the FSB to 220 and ran 3DMark Vantage. No issues, but not really a stress test.

I'm still sort of new to this but why is it I can get it to 220 MGhz with 2 cores down and not with all 4 up?

3DMark scores were no different with 2 cores at 220 Mghz FSB than with 4 cores at 210 Mghz. Temps were well below norm with 4 cores which would be expected I guess.

The reason I am asking is I was about to buy some different memory because I think it is what is holding me back.

My guess is that you need to bump the voltage a bit somewhere. It's been a long time since I overclocked AMD.

I would recommend you go over to the Amd forum and read the guide on overclocking AMD processors. It could be your HT link try dropping it from 5 to 4 or if its this way 1000 to 800.

Based on that guide it's the CPU. I can push my reference clock to 265 Mhhz or more. I stopped because the vCore adjusted itself to 1.55v even though I had it set to 1.35v as directed in the guide. I moved on to the CPU and with all settings as directed could not get it stable at 12.5 multi and 215 Mghz reference clock. Not even at 1.50v on the vCore. I never even moved on to the memory as the CPU is the problem. I set the memory back to the timings I had which were 5-4-4-15 2T and a reference clock of 210 Mghz.

Just curious but why does the voltage increase even when manually set to 1.35 in BIOS?

I also wasn't able to lower my HT multi below x5 ( I assume it's the NB Multi as I didn't see anything referencing the HT Multi.) as it is the lowest multiple in the BIOS on my board. This wasn't an issue however as I only stopped pushing the reference clock because on the vCore increasing to 1.55v on it's own.

I went ahead and followed the instructions for the memory today just to see what would happen. I set the multi to 10x, voltage to 1.5v worked the FSB to 215 Mhz w/ memory set at 5-5-5-15-2T 800Mhz. It booted and appeared stable but the vCore had adjusted to 1.6v!!?? according to PC Probe and CPU-Z. I went back to BIOS immediately to set it back to defaults.

Title should read : "If you can make it to the site."

I don't know *** is up with this site lately. Seems as though it's in a downward spiral.

Mind saving yoru BIOS Profile and hooking me up with a copy?

I've had a few people say the memory was the issue and the only real difference between ours is the meory and PSU.

My memory runs at 5-4-4-15-2T, 2.1v, @ 840Mhz
