Is there an advantage to an Opteron for desktop applications over a Phenom, or would it be better to have a Phenom?

My question is whether that would have an performance improvement/detriment over a Phenom.

Hope this helps.

Phenoms are Built for the everyman. They are optimized for media, games, stuff like that. Personally, I would say go for the Phenom, as what you get from the premiums the opterons carry isnt enough to warrant buying it when a phenom would do the same job cheaper. If you just like the idea of a server chip, or you want to experiment with overclocking, then go for the opty. But bear in mind the differences in performance will be minimal to none. Quote:

Opterons use the AM2(+) socket like the Phenom, doesn't it?

The budapest cores (Quads) use AM2+.
The older Dual's just have standard AM2+ Also, just for comparison: Opteron 1354 2.2Ghz Phenom 9550 2.2Ghz You can check the respective overclocks you can get from those chips in my phenom overclocking guide. Links in the sig

Virtually this same thread popped up the other day, but in the Intel section.
AM2+ opterons will be very little different than their AM2+ Phenom counterparts. The only difference you'll likely notice is a little lighter wallet. Get a Phenom.

Yep, the reason that the opterons are "built like bombshelters" is because they use higher quality silcon and the like, which allows them to be much more reliable under stress., although personally, I don't think the price difference is worth it for the average user.
Good luck
