Ok so when I built my new quad system I thought it would be fun to let my friend put my old AMD Athlon 64 3700+ sock 939 into a new case...
__________________Well for whatever unknown reason he took off the zalman wanting to put the stock fan from my new quad on it... that wasnt going to work so i remounted it and noticed he bent pins... I bent the pins back got it back into the socket... But when i power the system on it makes a high pitched whining noise seemingly from the power supply... Anyway the real question is can you bend pins back and be ok? (I think the PSU is just dead)

yes you can bend the pins back and be OK, definitely a bad PSU.

Yes you can bend the pins back and have the chip potentially work again. The high pitch squeal you are hearing may in fact be form the PSU because of bad bearings in its fan. Or it could be from the motherboard itself which has shorted due to the CPU faulting the board. To test if its the fan place a non conductive object in the fan assembly (like a plastic pen) to stop the fan from moving, then power up briefly to see if the noise has stopped.

Yes, its ok, and easy. Use a Mechanical pencil. Take out the lead (i know its not lead) and use the tip of it on the pins. It will give great support and be a good guide.

My PSU used to squeal because of my cathodes. as long as its supplying correct voltages i would'nt worry about it.

Ok quick question...
__________________What's the easiest way to set a motherboard up outside of a case... For instance on my desk... I've never tried it so I really don't know what I need to do to set one up like that. Thanks in advance ![]() (Yes I'm planning on unplugging my sig build PSU while leaving case intact and trying on old) edit: can this potentially damage my PSU?

Is this what you mean?
Also what about damaging my power supply? Is that possible if any parts are bad?
