Oh also since this doesn't have to be done right now, waiting for the 5k series and new am3s isn't such a bad idea though you will definately be shelling out A LOT more money that way

I dunno, just throwing ideas your way.

Also, i dunno about you but im getting tired of my 780/700 chipset.
very very good point. i like the idea. by the time bulldozer comes, i'm already a graduate with a job. and i wouldn't mind being stuck with a 790g chipset. i'm just after acc anyway. then i can probably buy a new rig.

it's the best idea so far. +rep to you sir

i can only wait till july. and i would be so heartbroken when those new chips will be delayed. that 940be at $160 is really a deal in my area. i just hesitate coz of the upgrade path

If it is a used cpu, make sure that that there aren't any issues with it. I'm reluctant to buy any used computer stuff.

940BE and 720BE are good choice.
If you want AM3 board and DDR3, you can choose 720 BE.
If you want one more core, choose 940 BE.

I'd go with the 810, it's a quad and AM3. I wouldn't buy anything that still uses DDR2 at this point as its on its way out.
