Take in consideration that every board is different and many chips look very similar, so to be 100% certain of what's what, google the chip to find out. Otherwise following the buses on the back of your particular board will give away each chip's function rather quickly. And some are quite obvious when they say, "Realtek" for example right on the chip.

Think about what each chip is doing. For example, if you are not using your on board audio, don't waste a heat sink on it because it's not much more than dead weight, but if you are gaming or rendering HD or multi-channel audio for an extended period of time, definitely help that chip out.

Now it's been a few years since I got my Microsoft A+ certification, but I'm pretty confident these labels are accurate. However, I will humbly accept any corrections if they are found. I hope that helps!

Hey man, that's so nice of you. I really appreciate it. Thank you so much!

I just want to be sure about a few things...

I'm not using any PCI-e slots, only PCI. So I don't need a heatsink on the PCI-Enhanced processor?

I'm using the onboard Radeon HD3300 IGP for my video and have no video cards installed. I have one monitor now but will add another monitor soon. Do I need a heatsink on the Crossfire/SLI controller or is that only if I'm using Crossfire/SLI cards?

Thanks again!

Nah, I would think they would barely get warm. Go into your BIOS and set your primary or 1st video/vga device to onboard. You may even have an option to disable them all-together, but that VIA chip may still be doing some processing. You should have room enough to feel those chips while it's running and if you're 1st impression is, "Hmm well I can't tell", then don't waste a heat sink on it, but if you touch it and you immediately get the sensation of heat, then it would definitely be worth it.

***Make sure you ground yourself by touching the case WITH it plugged in before you touch any components.

that chip you surrounded in maroon isn't the L3 cache... that is contained inside the CPU. Try and get a sink on that, if you do I will give you a cookie

Just FYI the e in PCI-E or PCIe stands for Express, not extended, and i highly doubt you could fit a ramsink on one of those with the graphics card installed.

oh and I'm not so sure of that VIA chip either - the PCIe controller is on the northbridge, although you can add in an NF200 chip for example to gain more PCIe lanes. To my knowledge i don't think VIA has such a chip - it's most likely a legacy or USB controller that links to the southbridge.

That dark purple-brown thing you labeled isn't L3 cache

L3 cache is on the CPU's die, not on the motherboard

haha thanks on the L3. I wonder what those are. There are 3 of those little guys on his board.

NF 200 chip was on the 780i boards allowing for the full 3 way 16x PCI-e lanes at 2.0. The 790i chip is completely different and no longer has the nf 200 chip included in the NB.

His board, I believe does have that VIA chip for something to do with a PCI-e controller of some type. I googled that one. Of course, I could have looked it up wrong. An extra RAID controller maybe? Who knows?! VIA, maybe.

I think the main thing is to be sure all those VRMs are kept cool. I'd sure like to figure out what those little 1/4" squares are with leads coming from all sides. I've got so much crap surrounding all my MBs that I can't fit my hand in to feel it.

question: how are these secured? I saw someone used superglue but i'm not sure how good that is for temps and/or RMA...

Thanks for the tip! I now have my Primary Graphics Adapter set to onboard.

How do you guys think it would be to put heat sinks on the ferrite core chokes? I keep wondering 'cuz they are next to the mosfets and super hot.

Thermal tape

Some boards have pushpins as well, but boards like the Asrock above and my gigabyte don't. (Unfortunately)
