Default CPU Bottleneck

Just a quick Q, if I replaced my mobo and put a 2nd 4770 in CF using my current CPU would it be bottlenecking my system?? if so would I see a framerate improvement by swapping the CPU to a Phenom II 550BE but sticking with the single 4770 until I can afford a 2nd one!

Hmmm, that is a close call. Depends on what you use your computer mainly to do.

If you are shooting for the best framerate increase , then your CPU should be fine and i would go with the second video card. I don't know any games in existance that will bottleneck that CPU (yet). But i can think of a few games what will bottleneck that video card.

(I could play Crysis on High settings with my old 2.0 Ghz 3500+ when i oc'ed it to 2.5 without the CPU bottlenecking.)

If you do any photoshop, folding, or media editing, i would go with the better processor. Also, if you are one of those people that like to have 1,000 open windows at once go with a new processor.

Good questions. In your situation I would get the second 4770, it will be the biggest improvement in your short term framerate equation. As for the CF 4770's bottlenecking your system the chances are very likely they will be at higher resolutions with AA/AF enabled due in part to the limited cache of your CPU. If possible make your second upgrade choice a quad core. Its a widely recommended for SLI/CF setups and you will notice a much larger gains over a newer dual core processor like the 550BE.

The best option I think would also be to go down the line of a second 4770 it will have the biggest effect as of the bottle neck I think it should be minimal at most.

ok, thanks guys, I think I'm going to get a gigabyte Mobo, most likely this one:
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...=5&subcat=1377
as it will support my current CPU until I upgrade that at a later date

oh, and if your saying get a quad for the crossfiring, would you say a Phenom 9950BE is better than a Phenom II 550BE, I dont think I can justify a 940 or 955BE, so if I went quad it'd have to be an AM2 quad.

not an option, cant afford to spend shedloads more, the 4770 is pretty new too (kinda obvious, the card only came out a few weeks ago!) so im going to get a 2nd one at a later date, cause I mean 140 quid still outperforms most other 140 quid GFX cards and I need to upgrade my mobo anyway, the USB is broken, and the ethernet is iffy too, its been a hellish board, never going anywhere near nVidia stuff again, twice ive done it ant twice its been junk!

My guess is that your CPU would be bottlenecking your 4770's. My old 9850 BE @ 3.2 ghz was being bottlenecked by my two 4850's. Your best bet would be getting a 720, I think. That 3rd core I'm pretty sure is used for crossfire drivers.
