You should be able to get the PH11 550BE in this board. I am around 85% sure you can.

Hope it helps!
just had a look on the ASUS website, and their CPU support list is pretty old for this board (cause its an old board!!) but it doesnt even mention the phenom IIs, so is there any way I could find out for cert?? I dont want to go spend cash on a 550BE and not be able to use it, but likewise I dont want to go spend cash on a 7850 Kuma and find out I could have a PHII 550 BE instead later on!! lol

Just doen a search and there not compadible with the PH II cpu's but only with the PH cpu's. I think you should just upgrade your board + CPU and you can get a decent set.

I will be doing so, this is just an interim machine until I get a new mobo, but as Im going to need two PCs Im going to keep this one running, bin the crappy mobo in my sig (EVERYTHING is going wrong on it and its only 9 months old!) and run this new mobo + a brand new AM3 mobo. so the verdict is keep my current CPU in this new ASUS then, as theres no point buying a phenom 9950 BE for it?

Check this out

Looks like no Phenom II support, and the Kuma's and the Phenom I Quads are only supported when using the Beta BIOS.

Some quads will work though with the latest official BIOS. the 9600, for example

I seriously doubt that a 9950 will work with that board, Coming from someone who had a 9950. Only the really high end AM2+ boards would be able to handle it. You can try it if you want, but IMO it not worth it at all. You would be much better off getting a high clocked dual core or saving for a PII.

thanks guys, Ive been looking around, so for this board the best option realisitically is a 7750, or the Phenom X3 8750?
I'd like the AM2+ cause of the individual power lanes, makes it more stable under an OC yeah??
I see the CPU support says it wont support OC when using a B3 stepping CPU with the 8750, what isand how do I find out what the stepping is of a 8750??
