You will not be bottle necked. That is one of the worst things to ask on this forum, as you'll get all kinds of crazy answers. A dual core K8 chip @3Ghz isn't going to bottleneck any currently available single gpu.

Also, lower resolutions are where the cpu matter the most. Just don't worry about it, unless you have a multi-gpu setup or a single core/low-power chip you should be fine.

A 5000+ will bottleneck. At any resolution you'll find your games disappointingly choppy.

It happened to me with my 5000+ at 3.2 GHz.

Maybe bottleneck is the wrong word...

A 5000+ has a lot of trouble playing modern games. Whether it is holding back the GPU, or simply can't handle the strain is irrelevant. It just has trouble. I'm saying this from personal experience. I actually threw my 5000+ back in my rig today and the difference was quite noticeable when I fired up COD4.

My games right now run pretty well. COD4 runs awesome maxed out (except with no AA, it's a killer!).

Btw, I wouldn't get a 4870 with that PSU. Your PSU will blow up.

EDIT:Oops. You're replacing it. Good. Even if you don't get a 4870, I'd replace the PSU.
Haha, yeah, my PSU is a piece of ****. I've had this rig since December '08 and I'm surprised it still performs well.

dude, dont listen to all the people saying it will bottleneck, bottlenecking is a VERY ambiguous term, my 5000+ at 3Ghz with my single 4770 runs crysis on 1280x1024 (your kinda resolutions) in the high modes with a bit of AA and its fully playable framerates (30+) so do not worry about it bottlenecking, newer games are being optimised more for GPU consumption and older games dont need a big CPU so either way you will be fine with it!!

People seem to have different opinions.

All I know is that I had a lot of trouble playing games and when I switched to a Phenom, all my troubles went away. And I'm not the only one who has experienced this.

For your sake I hope everything works out, but if it doesn't you'll know what the problem is.

I think it is dependant on a lot more that just the CPU tbh, I mean you say a phenom improved your gameplay, well, yeah your running Vista which is a resource hog!!
This guy is running XP, so he should be fine with a dual core for gaming whereas you seem to have benefitted from the extra cores, which are most likely just helping your OS from bogging down the gameplay.

My 5000+ @ 3.2ghz bottlenecked my 4850 baddly on a 17 inch monitor, so yes your cpu will hold a 4870 back. I advise you to change your cpu first

Well apparently my system is unstable at 3.1GHz. I got a few BSODs when trying to encode videos, so I'm back to 3GHz. I've decided that I won't have to upgrade my parts for a year or two. By then there will be brand new ATI cards anyway, and I'll have the money to upgrade to the AM3 platform.

Thanks for the help!
