I have an AMD 5000+ overclocked to 3GHz, and I was wondering, of course, if I upgraded my PSU.. would I be able to use an HD4870 with little to no bottlenecks?

the 5000+ will bottleneck the 4870, not the other way around
![]() And I remember someone with a AMD 6000+, and it was bottlenecking his 4870. So it will probably bottleneck it but I'm not sure if by a lot

Not on a 17" you won't.
You'll be fine.

Any bottleneck you will have will be insignificant on a small screen like that (Unless it's a CRT that goes up to high resolutions or something)
Btw, I wouldn't get a 4870 with that PSU. Your PSU will blow up. EDIT:Oops. You're replacing it. Good. Even if you don't get a 4870, I'd replace the PSU.

You should have no bottleneck with a 5000 just overclock it a bit you should be golden

EDIT: I encoded some .mp3 and .wav files in super high quality and it did it pretty quickly without crashing!

Well the rule is the higher the resolution the games will depend more in the GPU, With low resolution the CPU is more important.

Should be fine on your 17''. If you go to around 20~24, you might get some problems.
And as the user said above, so it pretty much depends on what game you planning to play. Hope that helps!

I don't think there's a single game he can't max out with a 4870 at his resolution (except maybe GTA4 which is poorly optimized anyway)
