Seeing I had issues with my 2 x 1g 4890's and 2 x 2G ram, I switched from Xp 32 bit to Windows7 64 bit last night. Off the bat, It seems my overclocks have to be lower with the new OS. I was around 3.7GHz stable but 3.65 was unstable last night. I did not tinker much as it was late. Does anyone have any feedback as to voltages or settings that may need to be changed with my Phenom II 940??

Hi, here's what happens with my 940 also in the same range
I'm watercooled.... running about 1.44 v or so... 3.6 Stable in Vista... can get to 3.7, sometimes 3.8 - but it will crash soon thereafter if at 3.8 I can post to Ubuntu and run relatively crash free at 3.8. Haven't tested extreme's in XP, and I don't have 7 yet... so I'm interested in where this thread goes. I know that doesn't help your 7 question - but hopefully it will give you some background on how I found it to operate in the other OS's. All are x64 by the way... I would imagine the commercial release for 7 will be more stable... and maybe you can get higher then too

I had the same problem but it turned out to be my ram for some reason i switched out to another set and bam same clocks as in XP, And the funny thing that set of ram went through 12 hours of memtest error free. So take that for what its worth.,.Good luck

Win 7 64-bit is tougher on memory due to longer instructions. That's where your memory is probably struggling.

I have a phenom 940 and an asus m3a78-t and
I've been searching and searching, reading pages and pages of info that could help me, but something is just wrong with Windows 7 64bits. I mean, my OC sometimes is stable and sometimes is not. I have use every configuration possible, to see what's causing the instability but nothing found. I have an stable 3.7 OC with 1.51v, but if a go up to 3.75 with 1.55v or 3.8 or 3.85 with 1.55v is not stable, but is not just that, at 3.8 is stable with 30 min. of stress test, and sometimes it does not last a minute of the stress test. |

it's common knowledge with phenom 2s that x64 will keep you from the highest of clocks.
get the 32bit version. or go vista if you want x64 bit. normally phenom 2s peak at 3.8ghz with a 64bit os, while 4ghz with a 32bit os. goodluck

i just switched a 940BE machine from win7 x32 to win7 x64, and it seems to be just as stable for me (actually fixed a 3870 crossfire bug that i/my girlfriend have endured since i bought them)
run at 3.6 1.4V for 24/7 (florida heat) bench stable at 3.9ghz 1.52V (x32 i could reach 3925 but it seems to not like that extra bump)

i think I found the problem
but i don't know, it might be weird for you to read this. but running the test "without" the everest soft and the probeII, to keep an eye on the temperatures, it passed a 20 min. LinX benchmark test without a problem, and after that I keep stressing the micro more than an hour. and nothing happened, when sometimes it didn't pass a minute with the Linx benchmark and minutes ago, I opened the probeII soft just to check the temperatures, and when I closed it an windows error pop-up saying that the soft wasn't working well. anyway, I'll check this again later Rhoxed; what W7 build you are using???? I have 7201, and I think is the build that has to do with this |

yeah
the monitoring software causes instability to the system, thats why my OC is sometimes stable and sometimes is not. when I'am stressing the system without the monitoring program (checking temperatures) is simply stable. when I stress the system monitoring the temperatures is not stable. IF I open 2 or 3 monitoring programs the system just freezes without even stressing the system, just to check the temperatures. |

![]() logically, heavier windows needs higher speed, therefore win7 should be the best.. try win7 32bit since before u used xp 32 bit..
