Phenom I's aren't in the equation. The only quad in my budget is a 9600, and we've made it clear that it sucks.

The 710 is the best performing Cpu for under $100, bar none.

The 550, if unlocked, would be better. However, unlocking cores is no guarantee and you'll likely end up disappointed. Though the 550 dual is still a monster chip.

Definitely not worth the price paying for. Phenom IIs are much better for their performance and no bug that cripples overclocking & performance.

I wouldn't risk the 550, if you have the motherboard then it might work but since you are after a Quad... I suggested the 710 because even if you cannot unlock you still have 3 cores, if you cannot unlock the 550 then you are stuck with a dual core, plus they are the same price I believe

In the Hong Kong PC forum that I go to, almost 100% of the people can unlock 2 cores. Seems like a pretty high probability to me.

Very easy, but not in a PCChips motherboard. Almost any with ACC (sb750, sb710, nvidia boards with NCC) can unlock it.

Newegg has a 2.3 am2 Quad core opteron for 99 dollars. It is the B3 revision so it should not have the bug that 9x00 phenoms had.
