Default Wow.... is this safe?

Alright i was looking at ebay and found this CABNE 148 opteron

I notices he removed the metal part. IS THAT SAFE? and since he did how would you put thermal compound on it?

The step above lapping the heatspreader is to fully remove as you see there in the picture. Removing it, if done properly and with extreme care, can lower temps by as much as 5 to 10C and allow for a higher OC. Yes, you can put thermal compount on it,just as you could with Athlons which were open die cpus. You simply put it on the "metal" square in the middle and take care not to get it on anything else or you're done for.

I would not buy it,,Although I have removed my heat spreder from my X24400 I did so knowing the warranty would be void.Spend a bit more and get one in a box ! !

Having no metal plate is perfectly safe, all the Athlon XP's are like that from the factory. As for buying a used processer off eBay, I'm not sure Id be comfortable with that one.
