Default Auto voltage

Another 955BE post but they OC so good. I am setting just multiplier at 19.5 and leaving rest on "auto". Its in the high 3.9's but Vcore goes to 1.7 on auto.

This is .1v over the stated max but its the board doing it. Max temp on a 1hr Prime95 is 44c on the CPU. What can anyone tell me about high Vcore voltages besides my CPU wont last. I am stable and not any where close to overtemp.

Overheating is not the issue, electron migration is............

Electromigration is the transport of material caused by the gradual movement of the ions in a conductor due to the momentum transfer between conducting electrons and diffusing metal atoms. The effect is important in applications where high direct current densities are used, such as in microelectronics and related structures. As the structure size in electronics such as integrated circuits (ICs) decreases, the practical significance of this effect increases.

high voltages will actually kill your CPU faster than heat will.

Really not true. As long as you keep temps managable to an extent. It is true for Intel.

No, modern CPUs, with their high current densities will fail from overvolting, even when cooled with Dice/LN2/Phase.

So I am done then? The most recent 955 guide says for BE 955's just keep increasing multiplier until temps or voltage become a problem. Since my HT is not altered I am not OCing ram.

I do wonder why the BIOS would select 1.7V if it is a dangerours setting and why my mobo has the ability to go even higher by moving that jumper.

i believe auto usually over volts the CPU to give it headroom.

The 955 should run @1.5 v, just because the mobo set it there, doesn't mean it is what is needs. Some programmer put that as protocol for that mobo. Set it to 1.5 or lower and see if you are still stable. At that clock speed 1.5v should be aplenty.

btw are you a current pcc student?
