Default x4 955 vs x4 965

Originally planned to get the 955 but then thought it might be worth it to get the 965, but read where people said it's basically a factory oc'ed 955 chip and you might as well save some money and get the 955 and oc it.

I see more people on here with the 955 then the 965 and it just makes me wonder if it is actually worth it.

So is the 965 worth the extra money? (I will be air cooling)

well on air, the 965be can go 4ghz and maxes out at 4.2 while the 955be can go 3.8ghz and maxes out at 4.0.

there's also a tweak in the memory controller and it seems that most people here using the 965be doesn't seem to be hindered with their ocs on a 64bit os. while the 955be would need a 32bit os in order to reach 4ghz.

In my opinion, it's not worth it.

If you are planning on overlocking, the 965 will reach 4ghz+ fairly easy. The 955, however, will reach 3.8-3.9ghz easily, but will have a very hard time making it to 4 ghz.

Are these extra .2 ghz worth the 50+ dollars? Extremists may think so, but you may not. Regardless, the 955 is AMD's best quadcore chip for price/performance, and you won't go wrong if you buy it.

You can overclock the 955 to 3.4-3.6 on stock volts. Unless you plan on breaking 4GHz, its not worth it.

I can get the ud5p mobo w/ the 965be combo deal for $373 from zipzoomfly
With the ud5p and 955be (no combo deal) its $353

So only a 20$ difference, price and combo deal may change by the time I order in 3 weeks, but that's what it is currently.

I have found that many things on zipzoomfly.com are cheaper then newegg

Well you can get the 965 on Newegg for $215 with promo code EMCLXNX77.

There is really no reason to buy a 965 over a 955, but since you can get one so cheap, why not? I would go for it.

UD5P is a good motherboard. If you can get the 965 for 20 more I guess its worth it. Just depends on prices at the time when your buying. If the price difference is more than $30, than I say stick with the 955.
