This thread is to bring together the discussions on AMD Single core CPU's and is where you can discuss the 'How will this Stepping go?' or 'What is the Best Stepping?' or other similar and relevant topics.

Please use this thread only as we have too many separate threads asking the same or similar questions and do not make any further new individual threads on such matters as they will be deleted. This will then make it easier for members to search a single thread for similar posts and conversations.

Having said that, Do not use this thread for a real problem you are experiencing, please search the AMD section for any similar conditions that may help you and then open a new thread for your particular issue that still needs to be resolved or worked through.

Some existing threads will be merged into this one and others will be closed off.

Hey everyone,
I am currently looking into buying a new Opteron 148. However Ive read alot about CABNE or CABYE types but have no idea what that is. Can someone explain because when it comes to AMD i am very uneducated.

To my understanding, both of those steppings are very good for Opterons. I have a CABNE which I have yet to run

(money, holidays, you name it)

I did some research before buying, and the CABNE and CABYE are both excellent overclockers.

Are these the only two kinds of steppings for Opterons? Are there any advantages/disadvantages to one or the other?

The "CABNE" or "CABYE" are printed on the chip, most new ones you find probably won't be one of these two, I believe the most recent release was "CABGE" and isn't quite as well for Overclocking. If you can find a place that sells these you will beable to see what model or stepping it is, online stores probably aren't going to tell you.

Also there are a few more model's but the CABNE and CABYE are the best for overclocking so far, people with the other steppings aren't getting as well results and can't go as high.
I'd suggest just getting the athlon 3700, as it has been more steady on OC's. Plus they're normally a few $ cheaper.

Ok so if i was going to get an Opteron, I would want to find a slightly older one to get the better stepping. Would eBay be the best place to find these?

You can find them on ebay but people normally really overcharge since its a good overclocker.
