Default Phenom x4 945 95w: should I upgrade

So here's the deal, I'll try and explain this as simply as possible:

I am limited on $$. so please DO NOT tell me to just buy new X or Y because it's "better".

I currently am using XFX 750a mobo, and would like to get more use out of it for another year (probably pushing it). I would like to upgrade from my current CPU Phenom 9500 @ 2.5 ghz.

My main restriction (other than $) is that my MOBO only supports 95w.

The question: If I were to purchase Phenom x4 3.0ghz @95w, would it
1) run (well) on my board?
2) will it still work if upgraded to a newer mobo that was say 125w (would it have any affect on performance? ) such as MSI 790FX-GD70

Thanks in advance

1.) Yes
2.) No

That board is not great, so you probably won't get high overclocks out of it, but it'll be a noticeable upgrade for you.

The 945 should be a great upgrade but . .

That XFX board will not support the 945 without a bios flash. But since its an old board, I dont know if their is a bios that will support AM3 cpu's.

The 945 will work MSI 790FX-GD70 but you cant do sli on that board only crossfire because its 790 FX.

Hitting 3.8 was easy, getting a stable 4.0 ghz, that will be a challenge!

thanks, question though, i thought AM3 cpu's worked on am2+ ?

Does that just mean it's compatible, but what you're saying is the bios still doesn't work well with them?

I do don't I?

Either way, all he is saying is you'll probably need to update your BIOS to support new Phenom II's if you have not already.
