Default Matching chips and mobos

I have been doing research for a new processor for my pc. I have been looking at this

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-471-_-Product

But I just heard that AM3 chips can fit into AM2 boards

I was wondering if this

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-692-_-Product

would work on my mobo

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813138105

If not would it be better to get a new chip AND a new board or will I just be fine getting the cheaper but still great AM2 chip and keep my board? What should I do?

On many motherboards you can use AM3 chips as long as they have a BIOS update supporting them.

Though it seems like Biostar didn't support this chip. I think that may be due to the fact that it is a 140w processor. There was a few motherboards that would literally burn out when using 140w processors and overclocking of course was useless.

It does support the X4 945. So you could go with that if you are willing to do so.

Not all AM2+ boards support AM3 CPU's, i had and XFX nforce 750a SLI motherboard, AM2+ socket. Before i bought this CPU i asked them if it would work, they said yea, gave me the new BIOS and said away with me. Bought it (only supports up to 95W cpu's) installed it, and consistantly i was getting into problems, cores wouldn't turn on, couldn't pass 3 Ghz etc. Moral of the story, i coulda got a 955 but XFX made me not, and it's best to get a mobo the is certified for the CPU by the company right from the box
