Default 955 Running Hot ?!

hello i just put my 1st rig together and the cpu is running HOT !

(according to BIOS its 65+/-, in windows i used CPUID Hardware Monitor - 70-80 *C .

i used arctic cooling mx-3, on xigmatek dark knight (it sags quite a bit, so zip-tied it to case, also the heatsink is somehow easy to move

so i did i somehow install the heatsink wrong or is it thermal paste that needs reapplying ?

will post more details later.

My friend's 955 with Dark Knight only reached 58C on LinX load at stock with 30C ambient. Did you install the clamp correctly on the heatsink?

i cut off the zip ties(which were meant to stop the DK from sagging) and the temps dropped to 50*C, after i put my thumb down on "moveable end of am2 clip" they went down to 38+/-.

the temps are from bios, as stated in first post they used to be between 60-65.

something is loose then. Could be the stock amd mounting bracket, if that is what you said you pressed down on and temps dropped a lot. I would re screw them in tight, and also check the cooler, it seems like it was not installed correctly.

The cooler should be firmly secured into the mounting bracket with that AM2 clip. Make sure you are centering the heatsink properly over the CPU. Make sure both ends of the clip are locked into the AM2 bracket before you turn the lever clockwise to secure the heatsink. The heatsink should not really move at all now unless your clip is defective.
