Default Suggetions on a CPU

Well I'm gonna go AMD on my semi new build. I'm looking to spend around $120, maybe a bit more if it's worth it.

Now I have a GA-MA790X-DS4 with the latest BIOS, so I won't be able to get a CPU that is able to get its cores unlocked. The Athlon IIs look pretty good. I thought about a Phenom II X3 720, but they are going to stop making them. So I kind of want to wait and see what they release.

I mostly do gaming, but I'm starting to get back into filming. So encoding those files takes a while.

I was just going to suggest the 720 BE...

If you can get a used 720 BE that can unlock from here on the forums, that'd be my choice, and it'd have the edge on the Athlons for gaming.

If you wanted new, I'd get this and try and unlock the L3 cache on it, in a similar way that you can unlock extra cores on the 720 BE/550 BE.

Well see the thing is I can't unlock anything. The motherboard is an SB600, not SB710 or SB750.

Oh god, I'm sorry.

I should've read more carefully...

It seems like the Athlon II X4 is for you, then. The extra cores will help for encoding and other stuff like that, but it'll perform pretty identically to the 720 BE in gaming.

Guru3d Transcoding benchmark.

I would say Athlon X4 would be your best bet for an all around cpu.

I agree with the 620 and you'll save $20 from your budget.

Hmm I think I may go with the Athlon X4 then, but is it worth the extra cash for the 630 over the 620?

I'd go with a quad core CPU, maybe the Athlon II 620
