Default Phenom II 940 BE vs. 720 BE

Well I'm curious. I just got a 720 BE for around $85 used. The 4th core unlocks, and has been known to get 3.8GHz with a good board. Now my 940 BE currently gets me a 3.528GHz clock on a SB700 chipset. I'm wondering how you guys think a 720 BE will OC in comparison. Maybe higher? Maybe lower? Either way, I'm going to sell the chip that's the worst OC'er. I was hoping I could get a way better OC out of the x3 as I want to make a full transition to AM3.

Run your tests, but if the x3 is the worse oc'er, I'll buy it from you quick as mine doesn't unlock!

Did you test your 940 on a 750 sb or at least 710? I think that will get you a higher OC.
I would just get an AM3 mobo +ddr3 ram and use the unlocked 720 since it can clock higher than your current cpu. And you could get more money back from selling a X4 than selling a X3 unlocked IMHO

That was honestly the EXACT thing I was thinking of doing. I game and do schoolwork for college. I don't do anything that requires more than 2 cores really besides some conversions with dBpoweramp. Other than that, it's gaming and word, excel, and powerpoint. And of course email and web browsing. I had a plan of getting a SB750 AM3 board, DDR3 and hoping that if I got a 3.6GHz on this board, then I'd be good for 3.8GHz on a SB750. I'm hoping I can get about $140 for the 940. That'd give me money for the mobo and then a little left over for DDR3.

I'm currently at 3.7ghz on air cooling and 1.325V on my 720. I think the Vmax is something like 1.45. I'm on SB750. The temps are great. I haven't tried to push it any more yet though.

it really depends on whether or not you want to go with ddr3. Using ddr2 an unlocked 720 is exactly the same the 940. Though I have to be honest I'm wondering why you can only get just over 3.5 Ghz out of your 940? Mine does that at stock voltage, and will hit 4 ghz on air if I add volts.

The 720 is essentially the same chip. The 940's that did not pass specs were labeled as 720's with 1 core disabled. Some chips made it through that overclock nicely and unlock the 4th core some not.

Sorry, but the 940 is AM2+ and DDR2 only, so you are wrong. The 720 (AM3/AM2+ with DDR2/DDR3) typically has a stronger IMC and overclocks higher with the same voltage
