Im in the market for a new cpu, and i was wondering which would be best for me. i know the Athlons aren't really gaming cpus but how much beter are phenom 2s.

look at the rig i have in my sig, would a regor 245 be enuff if i overclocked?

how much better would an phenom be?

would a phenom dual core even be worth getting? or should i go straight for tri or quad.

i would really like to keep the cost below $100 because i need a bigger hard drive a sturdier case and an quality power supply.

any advice is welcome

Just get a Phenom II. If you're that low on money, just save up some more.
It's a stupid choice to take an Athlon X2 in 2009.

performance between the phenom II 550 and a Athlon II 250 is not very big in general, but in games there is like a 4-5 fps difference, so the 550 is the better choice for gaming on a budget, but its really all up to you. I think the athlon will oc to around 3.6Ghz maybe more, i know my 550 could do 3.9Ghz, so it was a pretty good dual. The odds of unlocking it to a quad are low tho, mine would but was unstable so dont buy it for that hope, not common anymore. Well, hope that helps.

i would get a regor if the jump from my cpu to it would be huge. im guessing its not, looks like ill save unless some one can tell me otherwise.

i say get the 550be
i jumped ship acutally from my 620 unlocked just to oc
anyway OSes still appear to boot faster on dual then quads or tris..
my oc on the 550be is at 3.8ghz

i have a x3 720be it a great chip but i like my x2 250 more . it games great and clocks high. runs cooler than my x3 and uses less power .. At 3.5ghz all day long load core temp 42c.. nb stays below 32c on prime95... x3 loads core temp 47c nb 36c. i have a good cooler not the best but its good .not as good as your cooler you will get better temps ... i hit upper13k in 3d06 on the x2 250 the x3 hits upper 14k. 110pts away from 15k both at 3.5 .. but the all my games play great farcry2 code of honor3 and cross fire..
If you think about not upgrading for a while the x3 might be the way to go
