So, it just crossed my mind now. I'm building a PC for the first time in over 3 years, i'm on a decent budget but once i have the basic build set up i'll pretty much bet putting another ~$300 into it every month, sometimes waiting and putting ~$600-800 every two months, and so forth. You catch what i'm trying to say, anyhow, i plan on doing this until i pretty much have a beast of a computer running. The main problem is getting the base system set up, as this is going to take me a few months.
Anyway, drifting off topic a bit, but to get back on the subject at hand... would i regret going for an AMD build over Intel? From what i've seen AMD seems to be a lot cheaper right now then Intel, it's looking to me like it might be my best bet to go for an AMD processor / Motherboard, not to mention i don't have to worry about Intel's silly two different sockets... Soo... How much of a difference is there between AMD's high end and Intel's high end processors? Enough that am going to shoot myself for going the AMD route, or maybe even so close that there's little difference? It's been a long while, so it's almost like learning all over again.

i5 > 965 (a little bit)
__________________but AMD upgrade path is nicer. If you want to just buy a new CPU for the near future, AMD is the way to go. If you just plan to buy a computer and buy a whole new one in a few years, Intel is the way to go. i5 probably has no upgrade path aside from going to those silly i7s in 1156 socket.

It depends what you want from the computer. For the best performance, Intel is without a doubt the way to go and the best AMD processors utterly struggle to remain close to Intel ones. If you want some good value, certain AMD processors are good (X3 720 is the notable one).

I've heard a lot of mixes about upgrades here.
i5 is apparently not going anywhere, and will be completely replaced by 1336 eventually (sooner rather than later). That being said, the i9 will be out shortly enough, and supposedly an AMD six core CPU? I haven't done my research completely yet, but I'm excited to hear what other people have to say on this. I'm actually debating on something similar. I'm thinking about going AMD with my next build. Just for the funsies. I will definitely keep tabs on this thread...

You will not regret going AMD. The PHII quads are fast and easely overclockable.

I had a 939 socket based PC that served me well for the past 4 years and just baught my sig rig for $700. With an additional $40-60 in CPU cooling I could get intel performance when compared to i5/i7s.

I don't think you'll regret whatever decision you make. it's all a matter of whether or not the price of intel a good deal for you. Personally, I decided it's not. I don't think having two different sockets is good for us, the consumer, and it's almost an insult to intel fanboys who may start off i5 and decide they want higher end in the end.
