Default Help O.C AMD athlon x2 5000+ Brisbane

Hello guys and gals i came here today after a very vigorous search of how my mother board works. This is my first time actually trying to do this, but so far i have learned a couple of things on how to OC in many forums including this one. Even though i got lazy reading everything im starting to understand more and more on how everything works. now on to my problem....

my current rig is an M2A-VM motherboard running on a Athlon 64 x2 5000+ brisbane G.Skill pc6400 2 x 2Gb RAM along with an EVGA 8800GT OS:WINDOWS 7 Ultimate 64bit .

The current clock speed i can achieve is 3.0ghz coming from 2.6ghz. while testing i get the Rounding error at about 2min 35 sec running orthos or prime95 64bit. My "DDR voltage"(ram) is at AUTO but i've tried all the way up to 2.1 and still get the same error at the same spot. i boosted the +1.2VNBSB to 1.3v and gets me no results.

my current voltage settings(from cpu-z):

Voltage 0 1.41 Volts [0x58] (CPU VCORE)
Voltage 1 3.36 Volts [0xD2] (VIN1)
Voltage 3 4.92 Volts [0xB7] (+5V)
Voltage 4 11.97 Volts [0xBB] (+12V)
Voltage 7 4.78 Volts [0xB2] (+5V VCCH)
Voltage 8 3.22 Volts [0xC9] (VBAT)
Temperature 0 53°C (127°F) [0x35] (TMPIN0)
Temperature 1 41°C (105°F) [0x29] (TMPIN1)
Temperature 2 25°C (77°F) [0x19] (TMPIN2)
Fan 0 3857 RPM [0xAF] (FANIN0)
Fan 3 1301 RPM [0x207] (FANIN3)

Clock speeds (CPU-Z):

Core Speed 2999.2 MHz
Multiplier x FSB 12.0 x 249.9 MHz
Timings 5-5-5-15-25-1T
DRAM Freq. 374.9

If im missing anything just ask and i will try my best to get it!

Thanks in advance

black edition or no?
don't go by voltages provided by cpu-z, but bios
if it's black edition, set cpu multiplier to 14 and voltage to 1.35v; if not, raise ref clock to 215
stress it for 10min or so, then if it has no errors, try 14.5 or raise ref clock higher
if it does have errors, increase voltage to 1.375v and retest, etc
repeat

i hope u have a decent cooler?
also, fill out your system specs

is stock default multiplier is 13, isn't it?
keep it at that to minimize OCing anything else other than your CPU

You've just about hit the wall for the brisbane architecture

You might be able to squeeze a couple hundred more mhz out of it, but it'll take a good amount of voltage and it really isn't worth the tiny performance gain

My old 5800+ maxed out at 3.2ghz on water

The rounding error could be related to cpu instability or it could be related to ram instablility, or northbridge instability.

The key here is to isolate each factor and find each limit.

So, drop your ram divider down to it's lowest setting. It should be 400 in the bios (other settings will be 533 667 and 800). Drop the HT link multiplier to 3 or 4.

Test the maximum frequency your FSB will support with a low multiplier, which will yield a low CPU frequency but will allow you to test your FSB limit.

Continue to isolate each factor within the system and continue testing for stability for each factor. It is time consuming, but this will give you a stable OC'd system.

Use this chart to determine what combinations of RAM divider and FSB will yield for RAM speed. Some RAM will allow overclocking beyond rated speeds which will allow you to use combinations of CPU multiplier and FSB speed to achieve the highest CPU clock and RAM speed. Ram speed is an important factor for overall system speed and efficiency.

Orthos or Prime95 should run from anywhere for 8-24 hours to prove stability.

Use the FAQ section and look for overclocking AM2. Keep tweaking.

For reference, the previous poster is correct. 65nm brisbane chips max out around 3.0, mine was at 2900.

Hope this was helpful, but if it wasn't keep asking questions.

Are you running blend or small fft?

Small fft will stress mostly the cpu

Let it run for 20 minutes, and if that's good then your ram is likely the culprit

But, ya, could be you hit the max of the chip

so the rounding error is me hitting the wall? i am running on stock cooling and i have an after market coming soon from AC so when i test on prime it gets to 77'C some times 80 and thats where it gives me those rounding errors so i pulled it back to 2.92 ghz for now

current timings
5-5-5-15-25-2T

FSB at 225mhz x13
vCore set at 1.35

STOP NOW!

75c is the ABSOLUTE MAX

That isn't where you lose stability it's where you start roasting your chip
