Lightbulb overclocking opteron 165

iv e just bought a opty 165 dual core. this is to replace my 144 opty which ive had for about a year. my 144 was overclocked to 2.7ghz with no stability problems ever. i have inserted the 165 into my set up and burnt it in. i then set about overclocking it but only got to 2.7ghz. the guy i bought the chip off told me it was good for 2.9 to 3ghz. the stepping for the 165 is ccbbe 0610dpmw which ive checked is one of the best overclockers. so i think my problem is my ram timmings, as as soon as i go above9x300fsb it will not boot. any help please. my system is as follows.

asus a8nsli premium mobo
g skill pc4000 2gb ram running 3,4,4,7,7,2t,16
x800gto2 vga
and my 165 opteron with a artic cooloin freezer pro.

please help i would love to see 3.0ghz

You are having the same problem as me my friend

I will get to the point, our mobo's suck

Seriously anything above 310 FSB and my board goes nuts, i think that is your problem. If you want to do any serious OC'ing i suggest a new board a new board.

If you think it is your RAM, put it on the 200MHZ divider and see if it will boot. If not, i am afraid it is your board, same as me

Also, just because your CPU is from a particular stepping, don't take it as gospel that it will reach a particular speed.

It's entirely possible that your board is capable of reaching above that 300MHz "FSB" limit. You'd know what this limit is, by the way, if you'd tested for it.

Having said that, you may have a CPU that may have just hit its wall. I've had a CCBBE 0610DPMW Opteron that needed a huge voltage leap to get above 2.8GHz; to get from around 2.6GHz to 2.7GHz it started needing incremental increases of VCore, so that was my first clue that, despite having a chip from one of the "golden steppings," it was likely that I wouldn't get to the magical 3.0GHz plateau.

Not all CPUs are created equal. Not even chips from a "golden stepping."

lower your ram timings in the BIOS settings if you have that option available to you.

Your FSB should be able to go higher,at least 333. Look and see how high your HT is. Try and keep that around 1000Mhz

Even thought the standard of a 1000MHz HT is the norm, try pushing it a bit and see what happens in the 1100-1200 range.
Also, if you care to try, upping the PCIe up to as much as 112 has improved some OCing on some MBs.

All of the Asus A8N series boards (with the exception of the 32x) were known to be subpar overclockers and many struggle to achieve anything over 250.

First thing to do is to make sure that yout HTT link multi is set to 3x then drop your memory to the lowest divider and try to again to boot @2.7+GHZ ,,, if it is not working you drop your CPU Multi to 8x and try to boot @ 333X8 , if you failed again then it has to be your Mobo

I heard is was unsafe to take the PCI-e over 101mhz? I have never tried to take it higher.

Really? Why did I reach 310FSB stable on my A8N-E then? That board is known as the worst overclocker of the A8N series.

It's unsafe to go beyond 110-120MHz, but I'm running mine at 114MHz ATM without problems.

And it's unsafe in such way that you'll artifact and your HDD's will mess up.
