I put together a rig for a fried of my dad's a few months ago cause his old one died. He never had anything but problems with it, an old socket A system. I used my old Abit AV8 mb, and he got a 3200+ for it. It has 2G of ram, a X1650 pro, a SB sound card, and a 56k modem(I know).
__________________Anyway, just recently he has been having issues with it. It will give alarm sounds. I have it here with me right now and am trying to figure out what is wrong with it. It gives the Abit high/low alarm right now, which is the overheating alarm to best my knowledge. When I go into the bios and try and look at temp readings, it doesn't even say one for CPU. I think this is where my problem lies. Could this be a CPU problem(again it's only like 3-4 months old), or is it more likely a MB problem? When I first tried to start it, it almost finished lading windows and just abruptly shut down, and gave the alarm.

Yes reset cmos multiple time to no avail. Seems that the MB can't read CPU temp for some reason. Even is I shut off the beep and "shutdown if cpu overheat" in bois, it still gives me the alarm and freezes/reboots in just a minute or two. Bios even froze on me once. Could the northbridge be overheating and causung these issues?

Does it seem abnormally warm? Do you have another cpu to test or another board to test that cpu in?

to me it could look like the CPU temp sensor is busted (socket A cpus dont have integrated temp sensors).
__________________if there's a fan on the NB, then check it... it could be that the northbridge overheats or something. At least be prepared for the idea that something on that mobo is busted..

AMDLUVR, have you felt of the chipset cooler or the HSF to see if they feel extremely hot? Check to make sure the HSF is in fact touching the DIE on the Athlon. Perhaps there is a small gap. If you could get your hands on a digital infrared thermometer then you would be able to check the temps. Good luck
