Okay, so for the past 6 months i've been without a computer, and I was going to buy a new setup, but that plan fell through, so now I just have to fix what i've got.

Specs:
XP Professional
1gb OCZ Gold PC3200
A64 3500+
Samsung 250gb 7200rpm SATA
500w psu (cant remember the name of it..the first modular one that came out)
DFI Lanparty Ultra-D mobo NF4

Well, we got a nasty virus and thats what I think might have caused the problem, but I am not positive. (my dad said it was me and my mom, but I dont even do much on the computer besides play games..)

Well the computer would boot up, and it would start to load but then reset it self, over and over and over until I turned the power off. I thought it was the memory, so I tried replacing that, and it didnt work. Then I shelved the damn thing for like 4 months and I just went to try it again the other night, and I plugged everything back up, double checked, etc. Turned the power switch on and I know it was on because the little lights on my mobo lit up, but when I actually turned the computer on, nothing happened. I checked all the cabling again and everything was fine. I tried again turning it on, and my PSU started smoking, but it wasnt even sending power to the parts.

Does anyone have any idea what part could be causing it, and since the PSU started smoking, does that mean the parts were sending power back to the PSU, which would mean that EVERYTHING is fried?

Any help on this issue would be greatly appreciated.

It might be a malware problem or your PSU is pretty damned.

First of all, start Windows in safemode

then, run MSCONFIG tool and uncheck all startup items.

after that restart, Windows would start normally. Make sure you install AVG though and run a full scan buddy

If it wasn't a malware issue, then get yourself a new PSU. I recommend Antec EarthWatts EA380 380W

I've replaced smoking power supplies before and luckily there was no damage to the other components. If you saw smoke replace it but before you do re seat your CPU and check your paste, inspect the motherboard for any swollen capacitors etc, check all cabling. At worst you could also have a fried board or CPU but hopefully not.

Jpie, I would also suggest making sure none of the stand offs are shorting the board out. Perhaps it's a grounding issue. I have seen this happen quite a few times. You can always test your equipment by placing it all on a non-static surface.

sounds like the PSU is fried.. also... Malware for xp if it keeps rebooting over and over it means ur missing files or u have malware on it.
