Question Vcore Higher than Set -- Why?

Hello,

I just built and OCed my new system, but I am noticing a troubling thing regarding the CPU core voltage. Note that this occurs both when my computer is overclocked and when it is not:

The CPU core voltage always seems significantly higher than the default value (1.3V) which it is set to. For example, at idle, CPU-Z usually displays 1.360V - 1.367V, while EasyTune5 Pro displays 1.390V - 1.400V. Under heavy load, CPU-Z displays a core voltage of 1.424V, and EasyTune5 Pro displays 1.45V!

My questions are as follows:
(1) Why is Vcore higher than 1.3V (at which it is set) at idle?
(2) I do not know whether or not Vcore is supposed to vary with load -- is this "voltage throttling" intended? If so, is it acceptable to go as high as 1.45V under load?

Of interest may be the fact that I have a Thermaltake 430W PSU. The +3.3V and +12V buses seam to be mostly steady and, as measured by EasyTune5 Pro, are 3.290V and 11.920V at idle, 3.280V and 11.985V at heavy load. At all times EasyTune shows GPU Vcore as 1.350V. To me, this small voltage drop under heavy load is a possible indicator of the system being underpowered, but I was under the impression that 430W was sufficient for my setup.

Thanks for any help,
Paul

Voltage in cpuz is rarely in sync with bios set vcore. Trust cpuz.

Thanks so much for that helpful information. Did I post in the wrong forum or something?

Well then, if I'm in the right place, do you have any insight as to the questions I asked? And if you do, would you mind sharing it?

Paulbalegend, if you suspect your PSU is at fault I'd recommend pulling it out and testing the voltages. If you have a multimeter handy you can check the votlages that way. Here is a guide that explains this process: http://www.clunk.org.uk/forums/guide...ing-guide.html

Let us know what you find.

Good luck
