sounds like psu power fail or something shorting out to me...although shorting would be more persistant. I would say start with power supply and work your way around the board checking individual hardware one at a time.
Instead of running 2gigs or ram try just one and run memtest on it. Then one more run memtest on that one etc. You might be able to find a bad stick. When I had bad memory i would get complete shutdowns as well.
