Question What If?

What if someone did not put thermal paste on a cpu but did put the heat sink on? Would it get really hot and short out, or just overheat?

It wouldn't do any of that it would just run hotter, but there is a possibility that it could overheat...

Not a good idea..
What would be the point anyway? AS5 is cheap as chips and does the job...brilliantly!

agreed, the thermal paste just helps fill in any imperfections on the HSF base and CPU die that could trap air (which holds heat), therefore allowing better thermal conductivity.

Most modern CPUs would get very hot, and then throttle themselves back to avoid overheating. Who wants to game with a 700mhz quad?

In almost all cases, it would run hot and temperatures would climb until the thermal threshold was triggered. The CPU would then shutdown. I've seen it a few times.
