Default old system not booting

Well, its been a month or two sitting in the closet. But i got new ram and a hard drive and set it all up into my old system.

I unhooked the graphics card, and the hard drive, because i just wanted to see it boot. Howver with 2gb of ram in, it just kept beeping after it booted up. Nothing came up on the screen. Then i took 1gb stick out, and i felt it and it was VERY hot. so i booted it up without that stick, and i just got the normal beep for bootup, but still nothing on the screen. Whats goin on?

-edit- when i turn it on, the fans and everything go on and and i hear that usual beep. Just nothing comes up on the screen (no signal).

Perhaps you don't see anything on your monitor because your graphics card is "unhooked"..?

Not trying to be a smart aleck here, but I'm a little unclear about that particular point.
