I havent read through this thread so sorry if it's a repeat, but I think a big advantage of going AMD over Intel is their cheap CrossFire boards. You can get AMD's flagship 790GX chipset with full CrossFire support (unlike the P45's crippled 8x second PCIe slot) for $100. With great deals to be had on HD4830's and occasionally HD4850's, the ability to get a high performance CrossFire board with tons of overclocking capability for $100 is a great selling point in my opinion.

You can get a PII 940 ($230), Biostar 790GX ($100), and a pair of HD4830's ($170) for $500.

If you bought the similarly priced and similarly performing Q9400 ($230), you'd only have enough money left for a P45 board ($85, single GPU solution unless you're a big fan of choking modern cards with 8x bandwidth) and a GTX 260 core 216 ($200). You'd be spending around $515 to get a system that is comparible, but honestly the pair of HD4830's would win in almost any benchmark.

That said, I still think the PII's right now are a better buy for those who already have a Phenom system and want to breathe some life into it. I still think the Core 2 dual cores (E5200 for budget, E7400 for midrange, E8400 for enthusiast) are the best bang for the buck right now for anyone building a new system. But for someone who bought a Phenom I and is having trouble getting the desired frame rates in certain games, the PII are a great upgrade to get Core 2 45nm performance for a reasonable price.

Actually, the new Phenom II X3 720 running on the AM3 socket seems to be the new best bang for the buck for midrange, it's just so cheap compared to C2Q and packs so much potential (it's a BE cpu) right now that I just can't wait to get mine on monday.

Didn't exactly read through the entirety of this thread either (is that a sin or something?) but here's what i think.

If money is no object and you want raw performance all round, go with Intel.

If state of the economy DOES affect you (yea..im in that group) and you want best costerformance ratio, go with AMD.

But i will say this (and i'm sure it has been mentioned many times) if AMD were to go under, we would all get raped by the monopolistic genitals of Intel's supremely inequitable pricing.

Don't worry, if AMD goes under we still have VIA and IBM...though I'm laughing as I type this...but you can bet that if AMD went down, someone would attempt to fill their place as Intel's competition.

I love AMD because they're the only reason Intel's CPUs have so much bang for the buck now. They really scared them by having 64-bit CPUs first, and imo Pentium D was trash.

I have never really been a huge fan of AMD becuase I have seen my dads pc go literally up in smoke becuase the athlon 3000xp literally got about 200C and just smelled so horrid for a couple of days in there. Then i bought my self an athlon xp and mobo and i booted and started installing windows and i go back in after a cigarette *sniff sniff* !!***!! is that smell? I shut her down and pulled the heatsink off and tried to remove the cpu from the socket but it wouldn't come out, It had melted the socket and glued its self in. I think it was just really bad luck but even so the core2 architecture amd can't compete with it, now the nehalem chips, what is AMD gonna do? I will admit amd used to be bad ass in the P4 days but those are long over.

Well, those AMD TriCore 720s are hitting 4.2 Ghz on air. Suicide runs are hitting 4.7 Ghz. @ 1.7v. They aren't that bad. I'd snatch them over an E8400.
