I have to admit, yes, but in reality 3.6ghz and 4ghz isn't very noticeable.l

Uhh. Yeah.
For raw high end performance, AMD can't win right now though
Phenom II 920 costs the same as a Q6600 and more than most of the e8000s.

A big reason people are going intel is that for some reason while AMD can produce chips that will rival intel (in rare occassions beat) on benchmarks at similar pricepoints: for gaming, video editing, and other such uses, AMD hasn't seemed to find their market in a long time. Intel chips are vastly outperforming AMD in these areas at teh same pricepoint.

I'm just waiting for AMD to pull something out of their sleeve. Because they know they can't just lie there and get beaten senseless by Intel unless they want to go out of business completely. Maybe AMD has some super-secret project under tight wraps?

If I build a new rig any time soon (unlikely), it'll be an AMD system.

Why? Because my 3700+/DFI Ultra-D/G.Skill BH-5/7900GT system was the best I've ever used. And I miss those times. Call it fanboyism, but my intel setups I've had since then were never quite as cool as my Sandy Setup.

I didn't say it was impossible to go i7 for under 1500 and have an excellent setup. I just set that my preference would be amd, the reason being that I would include a prelude, watercooling, a perc 5/i, and sli'd gtx280s before I made the switch to the i7. That's just me though. I think the principle still holds, either way though. The phenom 940 is significantly cheaper given that, when you put ram and mobo into the equation, it's about $250 cheaper than the i7.

The intent of this forum isn't just for all the people with the latest and greatest systems to hang out. It's meant to be helpful for all sorts of questions for a large variety of different components.
As some posters have said, some people have older rigs, when AMD was much more affordable than intel and/or more powerful.

Like many others, I couldn't care less about intel vs amd, I bought what seemed like a better deal at the time, college budget for the win.
I don't know how to say this without sounding rude but, did you work for and buy your i7 rig? If you did, that's cool, i'd love to have a similar build.

Why AMD? Why not? Overall theyre cheaper to build, work just as well, theyre newer technology. Even my 939 has an integrated memory controller, that until just recently, intel had seperated.
Recently, I was thinking of upgrading, was going to build a new PII rig. But then I quickly realized I dont even need to. My 939 system, still benches right up with other systems at the same speed. When I multiplayer, I ALWAYS am usually the 2nd or 3rd person to have the map loaded up and ready to play (sometimes the 1st). I can even play crysis without issue @ high settings. And now that my 4870 showed up itll be VERY high settings.
At any rate, I moved to AMD from intel. And my AMD is leaps and bounds faster than the P4 I went from. Ive gone to stores to check out some of the new intel based computers there. Theyre not even noticably faster. Hell I think I even load into windows faster. So my "outdated" rig is still VERY competative. When I built it, my goal was to future proof myself. I thnk I have successfully done that. I dont plan on upgrading my rig for another couple years. Or unless the prices on the PII get so rediculously low that Id be an idiot to pass up such an offer. AMD FTW!

Why pay more money for something that's faster, when something that's cheaper is as fast as you need. Yes, it's fun to have something faster--but not necessarily worth it. Besides, I couldn't afford to buy the fastest thing out (not that I'd want to even if I could), so I settle on what gives the best performance in my price range. And that varies with the industry at the time.

And anyone who's advocating for brand loyalty of any kind should be removed from the consumer market. I never understood people who remained loyal to an entity that takes their money...

That's not true at all
