Default The BEST 939 Chip That You Can Find

Ok, so. My cousin (Y3K) may be trading his Xbox 360 for a complete rig. Details here Now, the rig has a AMD Athlon64 FX-57 CPU. And we plan to throw 2 XFX 8800 GTX's in it. This creates a very, bottleneck prone environment. We are looking for the best socket 939 chip that is still easy to come across that will at least make this rig run a little better then with the FX-57.

This is not a for sale thread (we are broke). But I am not very knowledgeable about AMD CPU's and I saw this as a chance to get a little knowledge, that's why I'm making this thread.

So, post the chip you think would be best for the rig. Along with a link to a sale of it (if you can) and why you think that chip would be best.

*Remember! Socket 939 Only!*

Definetly FX-60 or 4800+, but they cost vast amounts of money. If I were you, I'd buy a 4400+ or similar and O/C. The FX-60 has unlocked multipliers and can get to 3.0Ghz dual core. The 4800+ and 4400+ are similar, but without the unlocked multi.
EDIT: Yes, the optys are very good. Don't know how I forgot about them.

I say Opty 165/170/175. They are very good OCers and, from what I recall, the best choice for S939. (I also think the stepping to look for is ccbbe, but it has been a while)

get a dual core, opteron or a FX. If you do decide to sell, people on Ebay go crazy and bid £150/$280 on them as they are hard to find

Either the FX-60 or the Opteron 185 are the best your can get. Both have 2mb of cache, both are at 2.6ghz. But the FX-60 has unlocked multi. If your board can do at least 250 fsb (HTT) then just go for the Opteron 185, it's most likely cheaper. If you're planning to bench it under extreme cooling then the FX-60 might be worth it.

What he said... I've seen many, many reviews that would suggest these two as the best of the 939's. But I couldn't find any that I could afford though...

Yes, I was looking for a cheap Opteron on Ebay.... Not really for say "cheap and well used" -.-'

I was looking @ the Opteron 185, for the high end of things. FX60 is just overpriced... Even the 160s opty will O/C well..
