Is anyone running this right now? Are there any (significant) performance decreases? $100 for Vista to eat up my Ram doesn't seem like a deal for me if it doesn't matter

Pretty much all modern CPU's are 64bit capable, there is not a significant difference in performance between 32 & 64 bit OS's unless:
__________________a) you use a lot of memory hungry apps at once - with a 64bit OS you can use over 4GB of RAM b) You use native 64bit apps, these are pretty scarce at the moment, Photoshop CS4 is an example as are quite a few CAD & 3D apps such as Inventor & 3DS Max.

running a 64bit CPU is fine with 32bit OS. there is no performance decreease (are you asking whether it will be slower than a 32 bit CPu and 32 bit OS combo then no?) but running a 64 CPU with a 64 OS is much much better and faster IMHO.

An OS clean install is the best way to go. If you just carry the HD over, you risk having a very buggy system with bad drivers, slow performance,.... Just don't do it.

No, with a different chipset you need to re-install the OS.

well then looks like im buying Vista then...I called MS a long time ago about getting a re-install disk and then said they don't give them to people who bought it pre-installed

you could clean out the past drivers, boot to windows and install new drivers for that current chipset, but i HIGHLY do not recommend that, just clean install.

If you have a legal serial, why not just download and burn the iso? Then, you would have the disk.

Please say you are not going to put Vista on your sig rig.
By the way. Pretty much all CPU's are 64bit now. It doesn't effect anything when running with a 32bit OS either.
