Default AMD Top Dog?

I was actually not into PC when AMD was top dog back in the hey day of single core processors a few years ago. Now that I see that they're planning a freakin' 6 core desktop processor soon I'm wondering if ya'll think they'll make it back on top again?

Not for a long while.. Core i7 will most likely outperform the 6core Phenom II by a pretty huge margin. The Core i5 should even surpass it.. AMD doesn't have a chance of retaking the performance crown until Bulldozer, if it turns to be successful .

Yeah I don't know if they will retake the "Top Dog" spot from Intel anytime soon, Intel seems to just always be a step ahead. On the other hand I think AMD's done a great job of finding a niche in the market delivering outstanding performance for the money with the phenom II series. When it comes to gaming, and most applications the I7 won't really punish the Phenom II 955 the way it does in benchmarks. When you factor in the savings on the cpu + mobo AMD you can see why this new series has been so successful.

depends on your definition of "crown". By that do you mean fastest CPU? Or in the most houses (where AMD wins due to price, but Intel still has the masses).

Other posters are spot on. i7's kick the hell out of Phenoms (which I love and own). But it isn't as straightforward as that.... they are always significantly cheaper.

i5 and 920 are cheaper than newest Phenom - but AMD has to keep one of it's chips higher than rest..but who would buy a 965 at the price it's at now - knowing you can score a 940 at 180 bucks (less than i5 and 920)

Crowns aren't necessarily needed. Continued competition between the two brands (as well with the GPU's too!) is what's best for the consumer....

Who in the world would buy a 940 when you can get a 955 (that overclocks better and has ddr3 AND ddr2 memory controller) for $189

Anyway I don't think AMD will be top dog for a long while again. Right now more cores isn't the way to go; the 6 core Thuban coming out in 2010 won't really help them. 4 fast cores is what they need to do really. They also need to get some fast memory support going for like ddr3 1866+.

As much as I like AMD, they dug themselves into a rut with Hector Ruiz and the purchase of ATI. Now they have to play catchup for a few years. Hopefully one day they will make a processor that was a good as Athlon when it first came out.

Yes, the 940 was an example - but as you astutely pointed out, the 955 is better on a number of dimensions (including the fact it's only 5 bucks more on Newegg)...

My point still stands that 965 doesn't make sense with new i7's and 940's and 955's kicking around

And who would buy a 955 when you can buy a 550 and unlock the two cores plus have DDR3 for $99

Sorry I just wanted to add to the awesomeness that is AMD. I know the core unlocking isn't a guarantee.

965 doesn't make sense when it came out in the first place. The higher TDP is garbage. Most 955s could probably get to 3.4ghz on stock voltage anyway. Why would AMD release the 965? They should just bin the chips better or refine the manufacturing processor to allow for lower TDP (125w or even 95w). Most don't even overclock much higher than a 955.
