Good HDDs are dirt cheap right now. Find a good 500gb one for around $60 bucks get the 32mb cache tho

If you want an overall snappier respose from the OS, not in game, purchase a higher RPM 10k mechanical harddrive, or a lower density SSD to put all your core services/OS and run your older drive as storage on your current rig.
This is what I have set up, and I boot into windows in 23secs Goodluck

There isn't too exactly a "night and day" difference with those two platforms. You would have to do a bit of some benchmarking with both to see any difference. You would notice a better day-to-day difference by upgrading to Windows 7, then by moving from the Pentium Dual Core to the Athlon platform.

Did you reformat/reinstall windows.. if not thats my reccomendation, in fact switch to windows 7 and its much faster.
If you dont want to go that route, did you at least remove the old drivers and install the new ones for you new motherboard? If not you should do so. Next, if neither of those two things work, then you can try to disable some things that normally start up with windows... be careful doing this you dont want to disable something you need.. find a good guid on it before you try. Then if that doesnt work go get a harddrive with a large cache.. youll see the best performance with a 32mb cache, and if you look they usually arnt much more expensive then the 16mb cache good luck

Hi,
__________________Thanks to all of you for the advice. I did install the drivers for the new mobo when I upgraded. To try to summarize what I have learnt, 1. I have done a upgrade(not just changing platforms), but it won't be obvious in day to day tasks with WinXP Home until I run a "intensive" program. 2. A new HDD will bump up performance, but by a small margin. Am I correct?

you changed every important thing besides the harddrive. you need a fresh install of windows, otherwise it will be really sluggish. no matter if you changed drivers or not. i can tell you that going from your previous ram to the new 800mhz ram should have made a big difference on it's own. whenever a computer is running really slow and i see it is lower than 800mhz ram we usually try and change it out and it runs alot faster by doing that alone.

Another vote here for a clean install of the OS.

Upgrade your harddrive to SATA 2 and install XP . A clean install . You will see good boot time and performance . Remember not the best .
