Hi,
__________________I had a DELL Diemension 5150 bought in Mid 2006. It was Intel Pentium Dual Core running at 2.8 GHz and 3 GB of ram at 266Mhz. Recently, I changed out my mobo to Gigabyte MA785GM, CPU to AMD ATHLON II X2 250 and 4 GB ram at 800Mhz. But I don't feel any performance gain. The windows boot up time is the same, or even slower? The only thing I hadn't replace is the old harddrive, WDC WD2500JS-75NCB2. Could this be the bottleneck? Do I need to tweak any settings? I am running Win XP home SP3. Sincerely, nhc

On the desktop, the HDD will have the most noticeable effect on performance.

What are you actually doing that you think there is no performance gain in?
As for the startup speeds you can find a good guide here that will speed that up for you by disabling certain services, that would not really change much with the components you upgraded. Also, you don't have a bottleneck. As said above the Hard drive is the reason for your slow start up times.

Right, TEntel is correct, a faster harddive will make the biggest different in boot/startup times.

When I was doing these upgrades, I was thinking that after it, my windows would start up faster. I was a bit disappointed that the startup time is around the same.

This. I'm not sure if you "upgraded" to a better cpu or if you made a lateral movement. Plus, you could disable certain things in bios that makes the boot faster, like the boot sequence and disabling legacy usb.

Can anyone tell me if what I had done is a upgrade or maybe a lateral movement?

You did reinstall Windows, yes?
Or at least clean all old drivers off your hard drive? Driver conflicts can be a terrible thing.

It was certainly an upgrade. But you will not notice it much until you get a better disk array.
