Default AM3 Build Suggestions

So this upcoming holiday season I plan to go AMD/ATI and build (mostly) a new AM3 system. I like their prices and seeing I don't OC I don't really wanna spend so much on a high end Intel chip in which I would need a new mobo for that as well if I chose that route. I was wondering if you guys could help me based on what I do.

I have a lot of movies/music but that's more hardrive based so I'm not worried about that. I would like to play newer PC games, I don't max out settings but I would like my PC to handle games in high resolutions (1680x1050+).

The rest of the parts will be reused from my sig rig. I'm also trying to keep the price fairly low as this is one of the points of my switch.

Case: Lian Li Lancool PC-K58W $80

Thanks I've actually been looking at most of those parts. I just don't know much about the Athlon II X4s, how are they compared to Phenom II X4s?

Phenom II 720 would be a better value than the gimped X4 620, IMO.

My recommendation :

AMD Phenom II X3 710 2.6GHz - $109
Crucial 2 x 1GB 1333MHZ - $47
Crucial 2 x 2GB 1333MHZ - $73
GIGABYTE 770 - $80
SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 4870 1GB - $155

$464

Similar recommendation to our pal dixson01974 here. But a more gaming oriented CPU, slightly more RAM, and the same motherboard. GPU is also essentially the same.

I do like both of the X3 Phenom IIs and will probably go with one of those. I'll also pick the GPU and Gigabyte mobo for sure. Still not completely sure on the RAM though I see nothing wrong with the Crucial 4GB kit.

Thanks so far for the input guys, it's helping me decide real well considering these are all parts I've been scoping out the past week.

+1 on lichts build. The 710 can be OC'd just as high as the 720, and the 4870 1GB is just about the best value out there right now.

Other ideas are to get a slightly different mobo. There are lots of good 785G boards out there right now, and sometimes its useful to have Integrated graphics (usually for troubleshooting, and for selling it to someone else and not needing a card down the road ). Most of those run $80-$90.

And personally, I'd go with one kit of ram for right now. It seems like the IMC likes 2 sticks better than 4 in terms of max ram OC's, and you can always get another 4GB later.

Good luck with the build

I have nothing but love for my crucial DDR3 1333 tracers, they overclock very well, and you can really tighten the timings. Fantastic stuff.

Phenom II is much better for gaming. Athlon II x4 will not be the best.
